Appreciate this inspiring interview. i'm relatively new to Substack , less than two years, and have been following Gioia since I started. I hope it is able to survive its success as it expands.

I'm very hopeful about the platform. It was very writer oriented from the start. And still pretty major writers for mainstream pubs like Atlantic (Derek Thompson) continue to embrace it. It's profitable enough as a gig that I think it will still continue to attract writers of NYT or Washington Post caliber for a while unless things change kind of drastically. The only thing I avoid is being drawn into comment wars or you're gonna be dragged into a more literate version of X...☺️

,With success comes an increase in size which often changes the dynamics. Going to be difficult for new writers who don’t bring an audience with them.

And with success you have the lure of increased profitability and being taken over by someone who wants to maximize the money coming in. There’s an advantage in remaining below the radar. Been fun for me so far and I’ll enjoy it while I can.

Awesome considering the context that I think Kierkegaard said it the other way 'round ... His emphasis as I'm recalling was on the understanding part, which closed the original quote ...

Great article, again. Enjoyed the entire interview, especially: "The key is to operate without fear—there’s no limit to what you can you achieve if you embrace experiences, and ignore gatekeepers." I thought I was a dying breed, talking my way into positions and careers without any education to back me up. Glad I was born when I was and was let in the door at all.

Substack itself is so far a nice alternative to the flame wars on X and even blue sky. But since I know Spanish better I'll call it "cosa nuestra"!😎
